HESI A2 Score Calculator: Sections, Cutoffs, and Cumulative Score

Tick the HESI A2 sections your nursing program requires. The calculator adds up how many questions and minutes of section time that test has.

Then enter your school’s minimums and your practice scores. It shows which sections meet the per-section minimum and works out your cumulative score, the average of the sections you entered. It is for anyone applying to a program that uses the HESI A2.

Pick your school's sections, then check a score against its cutoffs

Counts and times are the usual ones; your school may set its own.

1. Sections your school requires

Your test: 5 sections, 250 questions, about 235 minutes of section time (plus check-in and any breaks).

2. Your school's minimums

75 and 80 are only examples. Clear a box if your school has no such rule, and use the numbers on its admission page.

3. Your practice scores (%)
  • Math
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Vocabulary & General Knowledge
  • Grammar
  • Anatomy & Physiology

How the calculator works

  • Question counts and times are the usual ones school testing centers list for each section (scored plus unscored pilot items). Elsevier publishes no public blueprint, and a school may set its own times.
  • It starts with Math, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Grammar, and Anatomy & Physiology ticked, the sections schools ask for most. Change them to match your school.
  • Each entered score is compared with the per-section minimum. The cumulative is the plain average of the scores you entered, with every section counted equally, and is compared with the cumulative minimum.
  • The 75% section and 80% cumulative defaults are only examples. Clear a box when your school has no such rule. Some schools count only some of the sections you take (the University of Arizona averages four), so tick only the ones your school counts. Rubric points are not modelled.
  • Nothing you enter is saved, and no account is needed. A practice score is not an official HESI score.

Why it works

Questions people ask

How is the HESI A2 cumulative score calculated?
Schools describe the cumulative (or composite) score as the average of the section scores they count. The calculator averages the section scores you enter, counting each section equally. Check how your own program calculates it.
What score do I need on the HESI A2?
There is no national passing score. Each program sets its own minimums, often as a percent for each required section, a cumulative percent, or both. Use the numbers on your school’s admission page.
Which HESI A2 sections do I have to take?
Your school chooses. Math, Reading Comprehension, and Vocabulary are almost always required, Grammar and Anatomy & Physiology often, Biology and Chemistry sometimes, and Physics rarely.
Does a high cumulative make up for a low section?
Not at a school that sets both a section minimum and a cumulative minimum. Every required section has to meet its minimum on its own.
