Safe Dose Range Verification
Overview
Verifying the safe dose range is the step that turns a calculation into a safety check. The drug reference gives an acceptable range in milligrams per kilogram; the nurse multiplies both ends of that range by the client's weight in kilograms to get the lowest and highest doses that should be given. The ordered dose is then compared against those two numbers. This matters most in children, where a small arithmetic slip produces a dose far outside the range, and it is the last independent check before the drug reaches the client.
