Third and fourth semester are where school, NCLEX preparation, and career decisions begin to overlap. You do not need to do everything at once. Use this checklist to make one small move in each lane without losing the academic work that gets you to graduation.
Specialty lane
- Take the specialty matcher and keep a top three.
- Write energy/drain/curiosity notes after clinical shifts.
- Request a capstone or practicum aligned with a top choice.
- Identify one adjacent unit for each competitive target.
Experience and relationships lane
- Search extern, apprentice, student nurse tech, PCT, and CNA titles.
- Decide honestly whether work fits your course load.
- Ask two instructors whether they would be comfortable serving as references.
- Send concise thank-you and update messages.
Application lane
- Build a one-page resume and six-story interview bank.
- Record residency windows and recruiter contacts for each local system.
- Submit tailored applications and schedule follow-ups.
- Keep copies of postings; details can disappear after the role closes.
License and learning lane
- Track graduation, board, authorization-to-test, and NCLEX steps.
- Continue cumulative NCLEX-style practice instead of waiting for graduation.
- Turn target specialties into focused topic lists.
- Use performance—not anxiety—to decide what to review next.
Offer lane
- Compare base, differentials, hours, benefits, commute, and repayment clauses.
- Ask detailed questions about orientation and unit support.
- Use the local RN offer calculator.
- Get every important promise in writing.
