Tuition is only one of the costs between you and an RN license. This budget builder lists the usual line items in one place, from program fees to the state license application, and adds them up as you edit.

It is for prospective and incoming nursing students who want a single total to plan around. Every default is a labeled ballpark, so treat the starting numbers as placeholders and replace them with what your own program and state actually charge.

NCLEX prep is 0.6% of this budget — and it is the line item that protects the other 99.4%: a failed NCLEX delays RN income by 45+ days plus a $200 retake fee. Defaults are editable ballparks; tuition is the swing variable (see the pathway table above).

How the budget builder works

  • The budget starts with eight line items: tuition and program fees, books and course materials, uniforms and equipment, testing packages, clinical clearances, NCLEX registration, the state license application, and one year of NCLEX prep. Each line carries a short note on what it covers.
  • The total is a straight sum of the eight lines and updates as you type. Every line is editable. You cannot add or remove lines, but setting a line to zero takes it out of the total.
  • Tuition is the swing variable. The default assumes a community-college ADN, and a BSN, especially a private one, pushes that line far higher. Enter your own program’s figure before trusting the total.
  • The NCLEX prep line defaults to NurseSavvy’s own annual plan price, read from our current pricing rather than typed in by hand. It is our product, so weigh that line accordingly. It is editable like any other, and the builder shows what share of your total it represents.
  • The builder does not count living expenses or the wages you give up while in school. Nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere, the numbers reset when you reload, and none of it is financial advice.

Questions people ask

What costs does nursing school have besides tuition?
The builder lists books and course materials, uniforms and equipment, required testing packages, clinical clearances such as immunizations, a background check, a drug screen, and a CPR card, the NCLEX registration fee, the state license application, and NCLEX prep.
Are the default amounts accurate for my program?
They are ballparks, not quotes. Tuition in particular varies widely between an ADN, a public BSN, and a private BSN, so replace each default with the figure from your own program and state board.
Does the budget include rent, food, or lost income?
No. It covers the direct costs of the program and licensure only. For the wages you give up while in school, the nursing school ROI calculator handles that part of the math.
Can I save or export my budget?
No. The builder runs in your browser and does not store anything, so your edits are gone when you reload the page. Copy the total down if you want to keep it.
