Licensure, Certification, Credentialing & Privileging
The state licenses, a national body certifies, and each hospital credentials you and then privileges you for specific procedures.
Licensure is the state's grant of authority to practice: the board of nursing licenses the APRN by role and population, and without a license there is no legal practice, whatever certification is held.
Certification is national recognition of competence (ANCC AGACNP-BC or AACN ACNPC-AG); boards of nursing use it as a licensure requirement, and it must be renewed every 5 years.
Privileging is the organization's grant of specific clinical services and procedures (e.g., central lines, intubation) based on training and demonstrated competence; the AG-ACNP practices only within the privileges granted.
